I had the BEST 1st birthday!!!

Riley had a wonderful time celebrating her 1st birthday. On Friday morning (her actual b-day) 3 of her playgroup friends and their moms came over to our house for some playtime. Its so amusing to watch the kids play together, the moms have at least as much fun as the kids! Riley is VERY social and especially loves other kids. Spending time with her friends was a wonderful start to her birthday celebration.

That afternoon Grandpa Leon and Grandma Cheryl arrived from IL. Riley was thrilled to have extra attention and they were thrilled to give it to her. That evening we went out for dinner at a local brewery (because where else would you take a 1 year old for her b-day?) and I ordered off the kids menu for the first time. Riley is a great eater, loves to self-feed, and thoroughly enjoyed her burrito, avocado and watermelon. Its something I take for granted as an adult but eating restaurant food seems like quite a milestone for my baby!

Sunday we had a small 1st birthday/Superbowl party for Riley. We hung swirly pink “1”s and footballs from the ceiling and she was fascinated by them. You just never know what is going to attract her attention. Chad smoked 2 pork shoulders for 23 hours (he’s really dedicated), resulting to the most amazing, tender, flavorful pulled pork. A few friends came over and Riley loved being the center of attention and playing with everyone.

I made Riley her own personal cake, a pink panda bear. This is the same cake my mom made me for my 1st b-day and I was excited to carry on this tradition. As the group sang "Happy Birthday" Riley stared at us like we were crazy, then examined her cake for a while before daintily eating a bit of icing off the ear. She kept licking her fingers, then got to the cake and started shoving fistfuls into/near her mouth. She really didn’t eat that much but enjoyed what she managed to devour. I think even more than eating her cake she enjoyed squishing the cake between her fingers and playing with the icing.

It was a truly special day, one we’ll always remember.
